Innovative Play

14 12 2007

So I’ve been playing Portal this week and well, it just made me think a little about innovation. Portal is a great game because of how different it is. The same can be said for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed (another game I’ve been playing over the winter break). But most would say that Assassin’s Creed has a hard time holding their attention. Portal, on the other hand, is a game that flows so seamlessly! Each puzzle follows the other in a way that makes sense and doesn’t leave the player stopping and getting confused. I played from the beginning to level 13 last night and played some more today to level 16. The only reason I stopped was my lack of skill in level 16. Haha. But Portal is one of those games that you play and you don’t seem to notice that time is going by. When a game can do that, I think that is what truly defines what an immersive game should be.

So where does this leave us on the idea of innovation? Well I think Valve is the company to go to on that. Just play Half-Life 2 or Portal and you’ll realize how something different is successful. What makes it a success? Just ask yourself one question: Is it fun?
