I never really thought about icons in games until recently (due to my online class). There are soooo many signs and symbols in games that we just seem to “automatically” know what they mean. My professor brought up the Sims and how its so easy to understand what’s going on even for a new-comer to the series. I think anyone (and you!) know how your Sims is feeling or what they are thinking about. I know so many times I’d be playing the Sims and I’d see my sim sleeping in his/her bed and say “Aw! Look! She’s dreaming about Todd!” How do I know this? While she is doing the action of sleeping, a little picture of the character Todd (I just made him up. I don’t think I’ve ever named a Sim Todd….hmmmm….I gotta get on that) within a little “thinking bubble”. When my sim is talking to other sims, I totally know what they are talking about. A dollar sign over their heads lets me know they are talking about money. That whole game is almost played more through the symbols and signs than through the actual graphics of these Sims. Its really quite a fascinating idea.

In a game like Civilizations 4, you can see the icons in the top right corner of the screen and make some pretty good assumptions as to their purpose. If you see an icon that looks like a bank or maybe a money bag, you know that has something to do with your finances. The little flags that represent the different countries lets you know who’s on your land.

My professor points how universal these icons are. The Mario icons are so well known. Almost anyone who sees that mushroom image knows what it is. The same with the orange fireball flower and the star! Can any of you think of any other games that have icons in them that are almost so universal ANY one could understand it?

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

29 06 2008

DJ and I finally beat Rainbow Six Vegas 2 yesterday. I have to say that the story was VERY disappointing. I didn’t even realize what was going on until the VERY end. Apparently, some dude that I have no memory of betrayed us or something. Who knows. But man, the gameplay is awesome, and actually kind of worth the buy.  The AI was frustrating with the other two computer players, but I think that may have just been DJ’s forgetfulness to tell the team to attack with us and not just wait like five rooms back where we started the level.  I had awesome time with the Aug Para (gun) and my grenades! Oh how good friends we became!  DJ of course, excelled as a sniper and became very friendly with the flashbang, which was like a 50% chance of flashing the enemy and a 50% chance of flashing us. He’ll kill me for saying this, but so many times our team would be at a door way, he’d open the door toss the flashbang, it’d hit the door fram and bounce back into the room with us, causing our whole time to go blind and make the enemy VERY confused as to “what was that noise?!” I mean, I guess that could be a very strategic tactic, because I suppose tha’s the last thing the enemy would expect. Hmmmm….

I talked with my mom today about next summer and realized that I have a LOT of work to do if I want to get a paying internship at a game company. I really need to get a portfolio site up. I should have done it long ago, but I never felt like any of my work was worthy enough. I have way too many ambitions. I need to write out EVERYTHING I want to accomplish and just practice getting myself to focus on one task at a time. I get all caught up in the whole picture of what needs to be done, that I can’t focus on the steps to getting it all done.

I know I haven’t updated my webcomic. I PROMISE THAT WILL HAPPEN THIS WEEK! I just started my online classes this wee. They’re pretty cool! I’m pretty excited about learning more about comics and analyzing games.

As you all know from my previous post, I recently got a Gamefly account. I’m VERY excited about this, because not only will I get to play al the games I keep picking up at the store and saying “I really want this.” and then putting them back and walking out sighing and wishing I had a paying job, BUT (::takes a deep breath::) now I can also feed my achievement addiction. I have to say that i do lead a pretty normal gaming life still, but that little ping noise the Xbox 360 makes when I get a glorious achievement is like….well…I assume like a hit of crack for a recovering addict falling off the wagon, its bittersweet. I squeak and smile with the joy of my gamerscore rising, but then feel ashamed for being so shallow and wanting to do certain things for achievements alone.

I also played a 11 hour and 7 minute game of Civilizations 4 this week. I don’t why, I just randomly felt like it. It was intense. I ruled like half the world, it was amazing.

OH! I got an invite from a Frag Doll (SQUEEL!) to play Rainbow Six Vegas 2 multiplayer the other night! I was so excited and nervous! I accepted and was brought to its lobby. I wanted DJ to play with us too, so I invited him (we were on his xbox at his house). When he accepted it, it kicked me out and he was in. He signed out to try to get me back in, but it didn’t work. By the time I messaged Brooklyn (a frag doll) they were already playing. So she invited me again later. I clicked accept and it just didn’t go thru. I ended up not getting to play with her at all….I died a little inside.

That’s it for now.

Yay! New Keyboard!

20 06 2008

Yay! My dad had an extra keyboard lying around! YAY! I actually think I may like this one a bit better too….eh, maybe I’m just bias about the whole working keys thing….Anyway, I’ve been doing great with my internship and will be starting my online summer classes next week! YAY! I’ll update later today something of significance.

Brken Keys

16 06 2008

Hey ya’ll. I’m updating from work right now to let you all know that I have a few broken keys on my keyboard at home (where I usually update). The broken ones are “O” “P” “[” and “]”. Yeah, so I’ll be finding someone’s old one to borrow for a while or something. I plan on playing some Rainbow Six Vegas 2 tonight, hopefully someone will join me?

Discovering Katamari

13 06 2008

I’m probably the last person in the known universe to discover the simple joys of rolling up anything and everything. Yes, I have found the Beautiful Katamari and beautiful it is. It also has given me some of my most satisfying experiences with achievements. I have my most achievements with that game. Not that I really have much of a selection – haha. I have Mass Effect, Beautiful Katamari, and PGR4 (which I am horrendous at and should probably be banned from). All of these games are borrowed from the boyfriend, but I am getting my own copy of Halo 3 soon! Its on its way, so I can keep getting better and better and then be ranked amongst the gods of Halo and “mad skillz”. Ahem. Annnnyway…..

Oh, I realize that I have not told the epic tale of my Xbox 360 purchase! I bet you all have some many questions, or maybe you wish I would stop talking about my personal gaming experience and just talk about games in general, whatever. It was a dark night as continued the never-ending process of unpacking. I received a phone call on the cell from DJ, informing me that he got off work early and was on his way to come get me. So I got all ready to go, toying with the idea of an Xbox in my possession as I usually did. When DJ arrived at my house, I told him, “I’m going to get an Xbox 360…” he smiled and hugged me tight with a slight chuckle, “Okay…” He did not believe me. He did not understand the yearning I had for that white-ish box, to see that glowing green circle of light search desperately in the dark for a controller to share its deepest thoughts with. He had no clue that this time, as I told him was, “for reals!”

And so we got into his car. He still looked at me, his eyes and smile at that moment were the equivalent of a pat of the head. I smirked, knowing what my devious plans were and KNOWING that this time I would go through with them. As we approached the Best Buy he worked at I told him to stop there. He kind of raised an eyebrow and smiled, “Yeah? You want me to stop at Best Buy?” I nodded eagerly. He asked, “Are you really going to do this?” With a huge grin on I nodded again.

We entered the bright, beckoning Best Buy. DJ led the way, trying to find a buddy he worked with to get me one from the back.  I wrung my hands nervously with excitement and just nervousness of being an Xbox parent. I already had other children (PS3, PS2, Xbox, PS1, Wii, PSP, DS, NES) and now I was adding another one. Would they accept him? Would they all become fast friends and go on epic adventures of the electronic kind together? How do I even know if its a him?? With all of these thoughts racing through my mind, DJ appeared to let me know that they had my Xbox at the front for me. MY Xbox! I almost gasped. It was so fast, all so sudden. Was I destined to chicken out? Am I really ready for this?

After purchasing my baby, we got into DJ’s car. I held the Xbox 360 on my lap, cradling it. And without even thinking I said, “Drive slow, okay?” Apparently, this new bundle of joy was now the center of my whole world. So that’s what happened. I’m not going to go through the setting up process because that is another epic tale all its own. So yeah, my gamertag is DustBunny777.
